The Sinus Pressure: Yellow Mucus-Green Mucus Connection

There are several things that can cause sinus pressure. These are some of them:

  • allergic reaction to the environment
  • sinus infection
  • colds and viruses
  • some foods
  • smog
  • smoke

On the other hand, an unaddressed or improperly relieved sinus pressure can be the prelude to a sinus infection, and yellow mucus and green mucus in some cases. After several days of stagnation, accumulated mucus often gets infected and yellow and green mucus can follow. Hence the importance of caring for sinus pressure early on. The infection cycle is something like this:

  • there is an excessive amount of clear mucus secreted
  • after a few days light yellow mucus appears, followed by a darker yellow
  • in some cases the kind of mucus that appears
  • in other cases the dark yellow is followed by green mucus--which signals the infection is coming to an end

Obviously, should one nip sinus pressure in the bud stage, yellow and green mucus would probably no appear in many cases. This is important to remember. Prevention is better than to cure.

Early relief procedure
Addressing a sinus irritation or allergic reaction early on, as we have seen, is very important to avoid sinus infection. This is what I would do at the first signs of sinus pressure:

  • Drink 5-6 glasses of water a day
  • Do acupressure for the sinuses (sinus pressure points) to clear sinuses
  • Do steam inhalations if acupressure does not work sufficiently
  • Avoid histamine producing foods
  • Talk to my pharmacist about some OTC medication for sinus pressure

Nipping sinus pressure in the bud can help prevent yellow and green mucus and a host of other sinus potential problems
